Love is Sweet, Like Candy Corn!

Man oh man, I haven’t posted anything here in a while. I promise I have been busy. Almost too busy. Here is a custom candy corn commission I did for a co-worker. I had some left over 5×7 art boards and they said, “I want candy corns – GO!” So this is what I came up with. It’s like love birds, but they are candy corn and why are they on a wire, I don’t know. That’s just what comes out. Funny thing is that my son now sees shoes hanging from the street pole wires now. Maybe I should have put shoes hanging from the wire. Next time.

My brother Larry Chauvin is a teacher at Casis Elementary, so I have been following the news closely on Esme Barrera’s unfortunate passing. Then just yesterday he asked if I could put a graphic together they could use to put on stuff in her honor. I did not know her but I kept hearing how she was a lover of music. In my head I just kept seeing someone rocking out with their rock hands. Because that’s what you do when you love music that much right? It’s the ultimate sentiment that this band rocks and I just gotta show it. I swear, the idea just came to me and I just started to draw it out on a napkin. As I did, my wife says, “You know that is also the sign for love – right?” That’s when I knew this could be cool if I actually did it right.

Bottom line is this is a terribly tragic story and my heart sank knowing the community lost a great person like Esme Barrera and my brother lost a good friend and co-worker. It was really the least I could do to honor her.

Please feel free to use the graphic wherever you’d like and do with it as you will. Please continue to honor Esme Barrera in every way you can. SOLD! I like that you like the East Austin Studio Tour

I salute the East Austin Studio Tour for a tremendous job they did this year putting everything together and creating such a strong voice in this community. They still have a few kinks to work out, but by and large they excelled over past years efforts. I admit I approached this year a little sluggishly and was a little ill prepared. After the overwhelming response I got to my work, I hope to come back even stronger as I plan to take over the world!

Below is a piece that I created collaboratively with my Beautiful wife April Garcia. This is the image we put in the book and we are thrilled to say it just SOLD this week! We’ve done collaborative pieces in the past and struggled with the idea of ownership, meaning what part of this can I destroy and what do I have to keep. Sure, there is always going to be a power struggle, but I think we are more comfortable with what we are capable of artistically that we find ways to help each out.

If you look at the image in the book, it doesn’t actually look like the finished piece. What we did was first create the image digitally, then go back and try to recreate it. We wanted a fresh image and when due dates come up, push comes to shove and there is no way we are going to have camera ready art until the tour is over. We started working on a canvas, but half way through realized we were painting on the one with the wrong dimensions. What happened was we reconfigured the illustration to fit and ended up with what you see here. That’s just part of the process and in the end I am very pleased with the way every detail turned out. So last weekend my friend Chris Chappell comes by, stands out front of my house and begins to paint it. Before too long Fox 7 strolls up and wa-la! we both end up on television. There are probably more deserving people of this feature, but hey, sometimes you just end up in the right place at the right time. How I plan to win the Texas Lottery

So I decided a long time ago that I am going to win the lottery but just recently decided how I am going to exactly do that. On a recently googling of my favorite topic I decided to search for “How to win the Texas Lottery.” What I found was not and outright answer but a chance to increase my odds using Smart Luck. I tried it out and the first time I did I hit two numbers. Although the second time I didn’t hit a single one, I do think I found a better solution rather than hoping “Quick Picks” would work.

Why am I telling you this? I feel my Earth moving and it’s time for some big changes. I’ll let you know how it goes real soon!

UPDATE: I didn’t win. Not a single number again. Dammit. Today is the day I start writing a real business plan.

My latest love in life is something that takes me back to the time when I hated the idea of learning how to write my letters. I just can’t get enough of it now. I have a little sketch book and when I find a quote someone just spits out, I will write them down. I’m not talking about some Einstein crap. Just everyday quotes that come out. It makes for a very interesting visual dialog when I go back to it each time.

Arthouse 5×7 2011 – Save the drama for your momma!

Okay, I’m turning this thing on. With all the drama surrounding this year’s Arthouse 5×7 show it’s ironic that the “Art Social” happens to fall on Friday the 13th. I didn’t submit a piece last year because I was in the process of moving, but I wanted to be sure to create at least one piece this year to show my continued support. I understand the severity of what happened, but come on, get over yourself, yourself. With the Austin Museum of Art downsizing soon, we’re not going to to have very many heavy art hitters, other than UT’s Blanton amongst a handful of smaller galleries like Women and Their Work, to give Austin a chance at having a artistic voice. So let’s continue the discussion but for crying out loud, lets not try to put the hurt on when our community can’t afford it. So Arthouse, I still support you. I know you’ll figure it out.

Free Rides: Everybody know that Unicorns are Real, they are just hard to find. Same thing goes for FREE RIDES. If I work hard enough I’ll find one of each!

Below the whole lot of pieces I have submitted to the Arthouse 5×7 show over the past 4 or 5 years. All but the current have sold so I am thrilled to be able to say I was able to give back to my community.

UPDATE: OMg… See the circle tag below my piece is missing… That means someone so graciously decided to purchase my piece this year. I’m always so stoked and thrilled with the encouragement to keep on creeeping on.
